February 16, 2012, Dr. Takim spoke at Williams College on "Diasporic
Jurisprudence: Shi'i Law in America" |
Dr. Liyakat Takim will present a paper at the American Academy of
Religion Annual Conference in San Francisco on Sunday, November 20th
2011.
The title of his talk is:
Myth or Reality: Ayatullah al-Khu'i and the Ten Readers of the Qur'an
An important view held by the Sunnis is that the Qur'an was transmitted
by 'ten reliable readers.' This paper will examine the views of
Ayatullah al-Khu'i (d. 1992) who refutes this long- held view. Al-Khu'i
takes up the reading of the Qur'an adopted by each reader, carefully
analyzing the variants linguistically and stylistically to demonstrate
that, contrary to their claim of its uninterrupted transmission (tawattur),
the reading of the Qur'an was based on a single transmission (ahad). Al-Khu'i
also challenges the belief about the seven readings (ahruf) and shows it
to be a case of invention designed to vindicate the variants in the
several readings. He concludes that the present text of the Qur'an is
the one that was transmitted personally by the Prophet himself.

Islam In America
In recent years, Islam has emerged as the nation's
fastest growing religion, making it, says DU religious studies
Associate Professor Liyakat Takim, "a very American phenomenon."
Takim's book--Shi'ism in America--is due in
bookstores in late summer or early fall. According to Takim's
editor, Jennifer Hammer of New York University Press, the book
breaks new ground, describing a community that has been largely
ignored by scholars.
The New York University Press will post
publication details about
Shi'ism in America in spring 2009 at www.nyupress.org.
